About unit pricing
Struggling to figure out which product is a better deal when the sizes and units do not match? Unit pricing is here to help.
A unit price is the price per unit of measurement of a product, such as “$X per litre” or “$Y per kilogram”. The display of unit pricing according to standard units, alongside the selling price, is intended to help consumers compare the prices of products easily across different brands and package sizes so as to make better informed purchasing decisions.
The standard units of measurement used for unit pricing may be by weight, volume, or number, for example:
Weight – Eggs: price per 100g
Volume – Cooking Oils: price per 100ml
Quantity – Leafy vegetables: price per item
Pilot of unit pricing in supermarkets
The Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (“CCCS”) and the Consumers Association of Singapore (“CASE”) have partnered NTUC FairPrice, Sheng Siong, Prime Supermarket, and Cold Storage and Giant to pilot the display of unit prices for selected grocery items from 1 September 2025[1]. Consumers shopping at participating outlets can look out for unit prices that will be displayed on the price tags at supermarket shelves.
